Learn the Facts About Breast Augmentation, Breast Implants, Liposuction, and Face Lifts

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Amy-Jo Strutt Twenty years ago only the rich and famous, mostly in Hollywood, had cosmetic surgery to keep them looking younger. Today, the avenue of plastic surgery is open to just about anyone who has credit card. The cosmetic surgery industry is flourishing as the mob of Baby Boomers starts to creep into their 50, 60, and 70s. Leading the way are face lifts, eyelid lifts, liposuction, breast implants and breast augmentation, botox injections, the famous tummy tuck, and the list keeps getting longer and longer. The questions we all ask ourselves is the one about safety. Will I come out looking better? We all remember the law suits regarding breast augmentation. With any surgery there are risks, the question is, are you willing to take them. There is so much pressure on both men and women to be skinny, wrinkle free, no grey hair, fit and list goes on. In order to achieve these loft goals, they are turning to procedures such as liposuction, which is basically the removal of fat from deposits under the skin using a stainless steel tube and a high powered vacuum. Another popular choice is the face lift where surgeons actually cut the skin, pull it up and stitch it back in place with the goal of reducing visible lines and wrinkles. Many women are also turning to breast augmentation and breast implants. Increasing or decreasing their size depending on the challenge they face. Finding qualified surgeons is no longer an issue. They are in every major city around the world catering the needs and desires of men and women. They are constantly doing research and experiments on new procedures and drugs that will be the next generation to the likes of botox. Younger and younger people are also interested in plastic surgery. Reality tv shows such as the Swan are taking cosmetic surgery to new heights. We highly recommend that if you are considering getting liposuction, a tummy tuck, face lift, breast implants or breast augmentation, you get a number of expert opinions. Remember, not all surgeries go as planned and the results are ever lasting. So do your research first and talk to existing patients before you proceed. Don’t Be a Bridezilla! What’s the Remedy?

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Mitta Vicki Wise Theres a term out there: bridezilla. A bridezilla is a person whos extremely demanding, has lost touch with her own true feelings, and the feelings of those around her. Bridezillas can be just plain obnoxious! Bridezillas can be born, but mostly theyre made. Women turn into bridezillas because they havent paid attention to who they really are, and what theyre feeling as they go down the path toward their bridal day. The result is that every step becomes a crisis. If you’ve become a bridezilla, what’s the remedy? First, get hold of yourself. Stop, look and listen! Somewhere along the line, you’ve lost your awareness about what this wedding’s all about. You’ve gotten tangled up in a mountain of details, and you’ve forgotten the people around you; in fact, you’ve forgotten yourself. A wedding shouldn’t be terribly fraught with anger and irritation at others. If your wedding is going this way, you might consider taking a break for the day. Go out and do something that has nothing to do with your Special Day. Give yourself room to gain a new perspective. Next, apologize to the people around you. People are pretty forgiving, especially in the face of an apology. Simply tell them you’re sorry, you lost perspective, and you’d like to begin anew. Then, tame your list of details and expectations. Trim things back to fit in with your time frame, budget and emotional health. Get a grip again on what’s truly important to you. Let some things go. Keep what’s vital close to your heart. Allow yourself to be imperfect. That’s what makes you a unique and special human being. Did you know that your faults are likely to be the very things that set you apart and make you enchanting to other people? A perfect person is intimidating to others- we all know inside that we aren’t perfect! When someone comes along who appears to be, we feel bad about ourselves. It’s in the sharing of imperfection that true friendship and unity happen. Forgive yourself. This is one of the most important lessons in life. We need to allow ourselves to make mistakes. That’s part of the definition of being human. When we’re facing something that’s really big and unfamiliar, we tend to make even more mistakes. That’s just our nature. Give yourself a break here. Maybe you did go over the top. Everyone’s going to be just fine in the end. Believe it or not, your wedding and the months that preceded it are not going to be forever engraved in minute detail on the mind of everyone involved. It may seem impossible to believe right now, but everything really doesn’t have to be “just so,” in order for your event to be wonderful. One wedding a bride’s father stepped on her train. There was a moment of held breaths as the sound of ripping satin reverberated through the church. Was it something one would plan for? Of course not! Was the wedding beautiful? Of course it was. Hint: remind Dad not to step on the train. At yet another wedding, the bride’s veil got caught in the rose bushes just outside the church door. Cheerily, she called, “I’ll be just a second.” Sure enough, everyone turned around and looked back. But the beautiful thing was, she was smiling and deliriously happy! We all waited while she untangled the veil and proceeded down the aisle. By this time, we were all smiling with the shared joy at her marriage. The point here is this: perfection does not usually equal happiness. It never has, and it never will. That’s something our culture has really forgotten. We think if we’re thin enough, or wealthy enough or beautiful enough that we will be happy. But happiness is about accepting our imperfections and having a sense of humor about them, not about hiding ourselves from others. So, you forgot and momentarily turned into a bridezilla. That’s okay. We forgive you. Now, you need to forgive yourself. Mitta Vicki Wise is an RN, Stress Management and Alternative Health Practitioner for over 15 years. How To Achieve Long Term Success In Treating Obesity

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Ng Peng Hock Obesity can cause serious disability and diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, sleep apnea and obesity-related cancers. For example, a male below 35 years old who is twice or 40 kg above his normal weight is 60 times more likely to develop diabetes, and he is also 10 to 12 times more likely to die before the age of 60. Most fat or even obese people can cut down the extra kilo in the body by choosing either low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet coupled with sufficient amount of exercises. The weight loss can mostly be achieved but the actual kilo trimmed and whether they can maintain such lifestyle for long greatly depend on how determine and discipline they are. Unfortunately, changing eating habits and having exercise to lose weight just cannot work for some people especially those extreme obese people who need immediate attention because of disability or risk of death. Or, it is simply because they cannot or not willing to change their lifestyle. This group of people has no choice but to get help from surgical treatments that carry certain degree of risk. According to statistics, only surgical treatment has a long-term success rate of 60 to 70 percent. Among various surgical treatments such as stapling, bypass and others, lapband has the least risk of death at 1 to 2000 versus 1 to 200 for gastric bypass. The risks of complications are also far lower with lapband surgery. The lapband is adjustable according to the patients needs and can be reverse if required. An experienced surgical team is the key to ensure a successful outcome. Moreover, the long-term results from lapband surgery are as good as the other more complicated operations and with less long-term nutritional disturbances. After the treatment, the reduction in weight will normally cause the medical conditions to disappear or improve. For instance, 66 percent of those with diabetes no longer have diabetes and 25 percent require less medication. For those with hypertension, 6 out of 10 become normal and 1 in 3 improves requiring less medicine. Some studies have compared lapband surgery and established non-surgical weight-loss treatment and have now shown that the lapband surgery is far more successful in reducing or eliminating serious disease than its non-surgical counterpart although the risk of treatment is the same for both groups. Now, studies also show that the same result in obese adolescents with very good and safe outcomes. But a word of caution! Obese persons seeking surgery to help them reduce the unwanted weights should consult trained and experienced surgeons or hospitals with good track records to ensure lowest degree of risks while achieving successful outcomes. Ways to Create a Healthy White Smile

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Maria Gonzalez If you do not have the money to go to the dentist and have them perform several (sometimes only one, depending on how severe the case is) Tooth Whitening sessions, do not worry about it! You do not even have to go to Wal-Mart to purchase a Tooth Whitening kit. You will have to spend some money though, on whitening toothpaste (I would recommend Colgate Icy Blast 2 in 1 mouthwash toothpaste), mouthwash and floss. You are probably thinking that this will not work, but just follow along the article and you can easily attain results if you follow the simple and easy instructions. You might have to have patience in order to attain whiter teeth this way (but I will say that it worked rather quickly for me). All that you need to do is brush your teeth only once more than you already do everyday. For example, let us say that you brush your teeth only once a day only when you wake up in the mornings, brush your teeth before you go to bed as well (remember the whitening toothpaste). Also make sure that you add mouthwash to your routine, this is the main killer for yellow teeth and the creator of a brighter whiter smile. Just gargle for 30 seconds and spit it out! (The longer you gargle, the whiter your teeth will get though). There are some fun Tooth Whitening tips for you! Maria writes for halibreath.com offering free advice on bad breath. Teeth Clenching And TMJ

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Christian Goodman If you’ve been researching TMJ for some time and how to treat it, you’ve probably found one overall statement from every reliable source: There is no real cure for TMJ. The only thing doctors can do is give out strong pain relief medicines or muscle relaxation drugs. There is nothing else they can do. Little by little, you get immune to the strong pain killers and other short term medications and they’ll stop working for you (if they ever did relief your pain in the first place). Your dentists may try his best to help you by making a dental implant. These implants are mostly meant to save your teeth from grinding down. It is not a permanent cure and usually doesn’t relief the pain, although it may be well worth it to save your teeth. The traditional health system has no cure for TMJ! You can’t really blame them tough. TMJ is one of the most complex conditions you’ll ever find. Every TMJ patient has different original causes for his or her condition. And not only one cause or accident. There are probably several contributing factors causing your pain. Both physical and emotional. Overwhelming feelings like stress, grief, or intense anger are often basic triggers of TMJ. Injuries, like car accidents or sport injuries are another common triggers. You may not even have noticed at all when your condition began to develop. Maybe you bumped into something but didn’t give it a second thought. Few days later you began to experience pain. Most often, there is no way to know the original trigger. Okay, that’s enough. Lets talk about what we DO KNOW! What we know for a fact about TMJ is, the jaw joints are always misplaced in some way. It doesn’t necessarily have to be complete misplacement (although sometimes it is). Small wrong misplacement can be enough. And the symptoms can be both nerve racking and painful… * Jaw locking opened or closed * Uncontrollable jaw or tongue movements * Clicking, popping jaw joints * Clenching or grinding at night * Grating sounds * Inability to open the jaw smoothly or evenly * Jaw deviates to one side when opening * Inability to “find bite” with teeth * Limited opening * Frequent, migraine type headaches * Extreme pain in cheek muscles * Discomfort or pain to any of these areas …are just few obvious symptoms. You may have some or all of them. Or non at all. Like I said, this is very complicated condition. Another thing we know for a fact is, the jaw muscles are always very tense. It varies how painful they’re or if they’re torn but they’re always too tense. These weak, tense jaw muscles will push your jaw further out of position and make the problem worse. This is similar to back problems. Most people who suffer from back problems have weak, tense muscles. The back problem may have started by using bad position when working, by minor injury, or something else that didn’t seem very serious at the time. As self defense, the back muscles get tense to avoid the pain. This is unconscious and uncontrollable. That’s why you often see people with back problem walk bent. The back pain becomes chronic when, the tension in the back muscles actually push the spine out of place. What was only supposed to be temporarily pain relief has caused serious condition. It’s no different with TMJ. Something that probably began as minor problem (maybe small bump on the jaw or period of intense feelings) is now becoming serious problem as the jaw muscles push on the jaw joints. This, then leads to series of other problems. Now the two jaw joints do not cooperate together. They’re unbalanced and uncontrollable. It shouldn’t really come as surprise that everything gets stuck. The pain is unbearable. It’s like begin constantly tortured. Nerves get squeezed when the jaw joints are out of place. This is, for example, the reason many people suffering from TMJ experience loss of balance. The nerve system, controlling the jaw are directly connected to the nerves in the ear, where the function balancing your body takes place. All the muscles in your body are connected. If one gets tense, all the muscles around that one become tense too. You’ve probably, for example, felt your shoulders and neck get stiffer as your TMJ grows worse. Less noticeable is the tension in all the small muscles in your head. Including your other face muscles, tongue, throat and even eyes. You may also feel like your throat is narrower now than before (you’re not crazy it’s true). You don’t have to imagine all the secondary symptoms this indirect tension from the jaw is creating. You’re experiencing some or all of them yourself… * voice fluctuations * sore throat without infection * swallowing difficulties * bloodshot eyes * tongue pain * balance problems, “vertigo”, dizziness, or disequilibrium * feeling of foreign object in throat * clogged, stuffy, “itchy” ears, feeling of fullness * watering of the eyes …plus endless other secondary symptoms, some people experience but others don’t. The only way to reverse the development of TMJ and heal your self is to loosen up and strengthen both the jaw muscles and all the muscles around the jaw. This does actually not require hard effort tough. The exercises are simple and easy to do. But you have to practice them if they’re are going to work for you. 1)The jaw exercises strengthen and loosen up the jaw muscles directly. As you practice these exercises, the jaw muscles stops pushing the jaw into wrong position. Instead, it guides the jaw joints into right place and that way heals your TMJ. 2)Consider how close the tongue is to the jaw. It’s no wonder how important it is to remove any tension from this muscle. You do that using simple tongue exercises. 3)You probably noticed how many of the secondary symptoms had something to do with the throat. You’ll feel a whole lot better after you practise the throat exercises for few days. 4)The neck and shoulder muscles are directly connected to the Jaw muscles. These muscles are usually the first one to freeze when the jaw muscles get stiff. They can, however, easily be put back into regular function using powerful neck and shoulder exercises. 5)All muscles need oxygen to function properly. Stiff muscles, reduce the amount of oxygen they can process. Using specially designed breathing exercises, you can bring these muscles back to life, so they may begin to function properly again. Most people who practice these exercises claim to get really good relief from them. Many totally heal their TMJ permanently. This is amazing, considering how complicated this condition is. But before you celebrate, let me be brutally honest with you. This will most likely take some time and effort. The exercises take less than 10 minutes a day on the average. But you must commit to them for some period of time. Some people literally get healed over night but that’s not the norm. Your TMJ has been developing for years (even if the symptoms just showed up). So give the training few weeks. Even couple of months. The muscles around the jaw must regain their old strength and flexibility. So must the jaw muscle itself. But that’s not enough. The jaw muscles must guide and lock the jaw joints into natural healthy position. This happens little by little (often fraction of an inch a day). The fact remains, this is the only method proven effective to heal TMJ. Nothing else helps! Do you want to learn more about these exercises and try some of them for free? If so, follow this link to cure TMJ permanently… http://tmj-no-more.com Christian Goodman is the founder of The TMJ No More Program ( http://www.tmj-no-more.com ). Don’t Say Good Bye - (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna)

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Sanjeev Himachali It is very painful to say, Goodbye to anybody. Separation is not acceptable…parting away is painful…more so, if there is no logic or justification in Separation. Life is too short to hate people or harm people. One must try his best to maintain…or keep the relation. And even if Separation is on cards…and if there is no other way but to move in different direction…do it in a decent manner. Sit together…speak to each other…express your views, opinions…and then say Good Bye…because Betey hue lamhoon ki kasak saath to hogi…khaaboon mein hi ho chaey mulakaat to hogi; lamba hai safar isme kahin raat to hogi. (Tomorrow I may not be there with you. We may decide to move in different directions…but my memories will always be with you. I know, this day is long but certainly followed by night.) These days…we are seeing many people moving out off relations. Be it Parents-Child…Husband-wife…Employer-Employee (Separation is too often and too frequent…in this relation)…Love-Birds (Boyfriends-Girlfriends). At times there is no reason, no Logic for this Separation…there is no justification too…but still people like to move away. Some of the reasons which I have identified as major reasons for separation in above mentioned relations are: Parents-Child If parents are more possessive/protective about their Kids True, in this relation there is a generation-gap, so if there is difference in wave-length…thoughts, beliefs and ideology Property and Wealth If there is no Space in the relation…and if they over-step their limits Husband-Wife Once again…if the spouses are over-protective or over possessive If they decline to share responsibilities If any of them is into extra-marital relation If they are not able to give enough love, care, affection and trust to each other and if there is no understanding. If any of the spouse is more closer to his or her parents. Employer-Employee In present scenario…in 21st Century…the relation between employer and employee is not permanent or long lasting…either employee leaves his employer or employer asks his employee to leave…this can be for following reasons. If the speed of the employer is faster than that of employeehe may ask his employee to leave; if the speed of the employee is more than the employeremployee leaves the employer. Growth…in terms of income, position and power If relation between boss and his subordinate is not cordial If the speed of the employer is more than his employee…then employer ask his employee to leave; and if the speed of the employee is more than that of his employer…then employee moves out of the relation. Office Politics also plays an important role in Straining the relation. Boyfriends-Girlfriends If parents don’t accept their relation (there maybe or may not be any logic behind). If society doesn’t approve their relation (if wife is elder to Husband; if spouses are from different religions or Caste (India)..) If they themselves are not serious about the relation and just got together to enjoy and to have some fun If they are not matured enoughstrong enough or determined enough to fight their way out. Future Securitymonetaryas well as stability is also required. Conclusion: Whatever may be the reason it is important to sit together and sort it out. Try your best to maintain/keep your relationif one or two compromises can help youthen make those compromises. I understand that empathy, understanding, a bit of patience, and lots of love and care and help you to SOME EXTENT to keep your relationslove ones and those SPECIAL people of your lifetogether. Many times your behavior, attitude, EGO, eagerness and rumors can make or break your relations. Relations break not because we dont love each other or not care for each otherrelations break, when we try to Possess our loved ones; when we take things for Guaranteed; and when we start considering our loved-ones as mindless, Lifeless property. It may so happen that you fail to save your relation and you decide to move away but don’t give any room…any space to if’s and but’s in your relation…tomorrow you should not sit and wonder…had I done this or that in this or that manner…it would had saved my relation. Hence, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. Even if you decide to part away…keep enough space in your relation…so that tomorrow if you happen to cross each other…or happen to meet at any public place…you must be able to speak to each other. I still believe that…Betey hue lamhoon ki kasak saath to hogi…khaaboon mein hi ho chaey mulakaat to hogi; lamba hai safar isme kahin raat to hogi. I will be too happy to have your inputsyour feedback. With lots of love and care What they have to Say: Loretta Hatch; Wisconsin, United States: Dear Sanjeev,I just happened to land on your website when I was searching for information on Human Relations Models. I must say that I was very impressed by your talent in Human Relations. I don’t believe that I have ever read something that was as interesting and inspirational as your writings. I learned a lot from your site that can help me in my personal life as well as in my professional life. I will surely pass this site on to friends, family and coworkers, in hopes that they will be just as inspired as I was. I hope that one day I can be half as inspirational to someone as you have been to me. Thank You, Your work is much appreciated. Harvinderjit Kaur, Detroit, United States: Hi Sanjeev, It’s an excellent piece. You have touched an important topic on relationships a reality that is losing its importance in life these days. Happy and successful relationships are based on understanding in order for a relationship to work, one simply have to talk and that means both sides making small compromises and finding common ground on which to talk. Talking and listening are probably the most important skills in a relationship. There will always be tensions and disagreements, but if one can communicate well, one can overcome almost any problem. To me, nothing can exist without love. You cannot live your life with a person you just like. You have to love that person. The existence of a relationship means you love. It also means adjustments, acceptance and compromises. At the same time one should not forget that nobody is perfect, so there cannot be a perfect formula for a perfect relationship. There are ups and downs in life and similarly in relationships. When we love the person and enter into a relationship, why then when there are ups and downs, troubled periods the relationship gets so damaged; when it started out so perfectly and happily? The truth is, all relationships will face disappointing and unexpected matters and there is nothing you can do to change it, but there are ways to properly deal with those matters without having to lose your relationship. I believe one should work hard in saving the relationship and only when there is no way out and we have exhausted trying all avenues should we part. A healthy happy relationship from my point of view is one that both sides are allowed to grow in the relationship. It takes a great deal of time and effort to keep a relationship stable without killing the spice or unique that drew you to your partner. Notable Notes - Study Tips for the Struggling Students

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

By Brian Shannon The start of a new semester is upon us, and I am sure many have made a new semester resolution about studying harder and doing better this semester. As good as our intentions , though, let’s be realistic — studying harder is not usually the problem. It is more of a question of what you study with - class notes. (Don’t get me started on the textbook…) A successful semester starts at the beginning with good note taking. I thought it was time to share a little about note taking, then, before it is too late. Good note taking starts before you ever sit down in your first class. It starts with how you organize your notebooks for your different classes. You don’t have to be uptight in your approach to organizing, but you should have a system. Sit down beforehand and label your notebooks (one for each subject) and acquire the appropriate types of paper for the particular subject (i.e., have a supply of graph paper for subjects requiring graphing - pre-calculus, trigonometry, economics, etc.) Make sure you have the appropriate tools for your classes (pencil, ruler, calculator, and others) associated with each notebook. If you can keep them together then you will never be “that guy” always borrowing a pencil or paper in class. We all have different approaches to note taking due to our differences in how we learn information, but there are some standards that are found throughout all approaches: Date your notes at the top of the page so you can reference back. This will allow you to keep your notes in a chronological timeline and keep you from confusing the order of some information. Give all your notes a heading related to the topic of discussion for the day. This will allow you to quickly find specific topics while studying, saving you from wasting time. Be consistent in how you take notes. Use the same abbreviations throughout and highlighting techniques like underlining vocabulary or definitions. If you are taking math notes make sure you copy down the steps in order. Be consistent. Write down all date changes for assignments in a separate class scheduler or calendar. Always re-type your notes at the end of the day before you take time off for your social life. Re-typing your notes helps to re-inforce the ideas in your brain, as well as keeping them legible for later in the semester. (It always amazed me how I couldn’t read my own handwriting or follow my own thoughts just two weeks later.) This will also cut down on the amount of time you will need to review your notes later when preparing for a test. Make a habit of reviewing your notes before class each week and not waiting until the night before the test. It will allow you to participate more in class, and provide for a better understanding of the course work. I learned later in my college life that if I took good notes and followed the above suggestions that I really didn’t need to study as much or as hard. Lotions vs. Skin Care Creams

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Ellen Biddle There is no dearth of skin care creams and lotions in the market. Name an ailment, and you will find hundreds of skin care creams, lotions and other products for it. As a result of ongoing research and due to ever increasing demand, the number of skin care products seems to be on the increase. Skin care lotions and skin care creams are the most popular forms in which these products are available, and there always seems to be a debate on which form is better? Well, there is no definitive answer to this. It seems more like a matter of personal choice. However, greasy creams are surely less popular as compared to the non-greasy (or less greasy) ones. Since the application of skin care creams is easier, they seem to be preferred (over lotions) in cases where the skin care product is not to be removed immediately after application. So, skin care creams seem more popular as moisturisers than as cleansers or toners. For toners, lotions seem to be preferred over skin care creams. There are some skin care creams that acts as toners too, but generally the toners are available in liquid form only. For cleansing, lotions and skin care creams are equally popular; however, the tilt seems more towards lotions. Creams are known to be most effective in keeping skin moist; hence, the most popular form of skin care creams is moisturisers. Due to the same reason, a lot of people tend to associate skin care creams with dry and sensitive skin. Though it is true to a certain extent, skin care creams are not used only for dry skin, they are also used for making products for oily skin e.g. vitamin A creams and sulphur creams that help reduce the rate of sebum production. Skin care creams are also used for products that cater to skin disorders especially for disorders that require the application of product over a small localised area. This is again due to the fact that skin care creams are easier to apply (without wastage) on the affected area. However, in cases where skin needs to be washed using a medicine/product, lotion is a better choice. Mostly, the manufacturers too realize this fact, making it easier for you to choose between a lotion and a skin care cream Eye-creams and anti-ageing creams are other examples where skin care cream is preferred over its lotion counterpart. Whatever your choice be (cream or lotion), knowing how to use it effectively, is more important than anything else. The Joy of Giving Your Notice (and doing it correctly)

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Melanie Szlucha Maybe when you were ringing in 2006, you silently hoped that at the same time next year you would be toasting your success in a new job. You fantasized about how good it would feel to go to a job that you liked, a job where you had career promise and did interesting, challenging work. You thought about what a pleasure it would be to go to work at the end of the holiday versus trying to contract some inconvenient stomach flu that would let you prolong the holidays a bit. Read it here, read it now: Your destiny is up to you. If you want a new job, then search and network for a new job. You need to treat finding a new job like its a job, or it will be incredibly difficult to make significant progress in a short period of time. With that said, this newsletter is about correctly giving your notice to your current employer. Im sure its something each and every one of you who are reading this has dreamed about at one time or another. As satisfying as it would be to just tell them to Get Lost!, you need to maintain a high level of professionalism throughout. Dont assume that youll never see these people again. Unless you are planning on relocating to a space station, assume that either you will run into someone from the company again, or that you will end up meeting (and possibly interviewing with down the road) someone who knows someone at your current employer. This world is too small to burn any bridges. After you have accepted an offer from your new company, (and yes, its better to get an offer letter in writing), look at your calendar. Most employers ask that you give them two weeks notice before walking out the door for good. If you have any unused accrued vacation, dont plan on including that as part of your two weeks. No matter how heinous the company has been to you, it is unprofessional. You want to always take the high road. Figure out what day of the week you plan to give your notice, and consider when you are starting your new job. All new employers will want you to start immediately, but will respect you when you say you need to give appropriate notice to your current company. If possible, try to work in at least one buffer day between the old and new jobs to give yourself a clean break. Mark off 10 working days from the day that youre giving your notice to your last day, and pencil that in your calendar. What youre going to do now is to write a resignation letter. This does not need, at all, to be a piece of paper where you outline all the terrible things they have done to you over the years, and why you are completely justified in jumping ship. This letter simply states that you have enjoyed working there, that you have learned a lot from the experience, met some truly quality people, but you feel that the time has come for you to move on. Feel free to plagiarize large parts of that last sentence if you feel that you cant choke out something civil. You should also state what you expect your last day to be, what your unused, accrued vacation balance is (if you know it), and that you would like to be compensated for those days. If you would like them to extend your health benefits for a few months through the COBRA program, then mention that too. For those who may not know, COBRA is a program under which you can ask to be included in the same group health insurance rate until your new employers coverage kicks in (typically a 90-day waiting period). You will be paying for this insurance yourself, but its better than not having any coverage and needing it. If there are any other outstanding issues, consider if they are things that you want to commit to in writing. There isnt a real guideline for what to include in a resignation letter, but typically the briefer the better. You dont want to put anything in writing that youll end up regretting committing to later. The purpose of the letter is to tell your soon-to-be-former employer that you wont be there anymore starting on a certain date, and that its been a great ride. You can mention health coverage if you want to (or simply state that you would like more information about COBRA), but if you are not sure when your new coverage kicks in you dont even have to mention it. Your HR or Finance director can talk to about it before you leave. You can raise the issue about unused, accrued vacation in your letter and state that you expect to be compensated for the unused time. However, you might want to double check your companys employee handbook first to confirm how the situation is handled. Remember that your vacation time that you will get paid for is what you have accrued (or earned) to datenot the full time that you receive over the course of a year. Above all, be polite and understanding to your old employer. They probably had other things on their schedule for the next two weeks than posting your job and conducting interviews, and are now not looking forward to the prospect. Be as helpful as you can so that when you leave they can honestly say that they would hire you again or recommend you to someone else. Moving on with your career is the best revenge of all.
